Perhaps the most unusual dinner experience Berlin has to offer: dinner cooked by Syrian refugees, hosted by a multi-lingual Hungarian in her own home.
For €38 you enjoy a variety of Syrian and Iraqi dishes: chicken, lamb, salads, hummus plus a chance to learn something of the Syrian culture. In addition, you make new friends and experience an evening that will be a highlight of your Berlin visit.
The hostess, Anna Gyulai Gaal, is a free-lance writer and enthusiastic cook from Budapest, Hungary. Wanting to do something practical for Syrian refugees confined to camps in Berlin and without permission to work, Anna came up with the idea of ‘Refugee Dinners’.
Anna realised that although the women no longer had homes or kitchens of their own they still had recipes, a desire to cook and to entertain and needed only a kitchen and some logistical support. Anna stepped up, offering her own kitchen and an affiliation with the tour company ‘with locals’.
Her evenings for up to 10 guests at a time are proving really popular with tourists who want ‘something different’ , who are interested in the refugees’ experiences, and are happy to support a good cause at the same time. The money Anna makes from the dinners, she gives to the cooks.
Dinners are organised twice a month in Anna’s flat in the Neukölln district of Berlin. To book your place at a Refugee Dinner table visit : withlocals.com
